Children were: Matt Dufee , Kris Dufee. NOTE: Notes concerning how I have found the eldest James and his wife Alice... Found a James Stafford Sr and Junior listed in King's Cnty (next to St John Cnty) in the 1885-6 Hutchinson Directory (available on the Provincial Archives of NB website). They lived on Shepody Rd. Then I found James Sr and William listed at the same location in the 1867-8 Hutchinson Directory. James Jr was listed as a boarder in the St. John Directory -- apparently, he moved out at the age of 25, and 1-2 years prior to meeting/marrying Catharine Driscoll in St John. At his point I did suspected this was our family, but I didn't have enough evidence. Just recently, PANB updated some vital statistics. I decided to look for any Stafford's listed and came upon an Alice. As I drilled in I saw the marriage record was for Alice Freeborn Stafford. She married William Yeomans in York Cnty NB on 6/18/1989. I them found many birth registrations for most of their children, with the mother listed as Alice Freeborn Stafford -- literally. I was then sure she was related to our James F, born 1842. I then checked the 1901 NB Census for the first time and found two Stafford households living beside each other -- one headed by William Yeomans/Alice Freeborn Stafford, and the other headed by a William Stafford. So, I suspected they were related and our family was growing -- but, I didn't yet have as tight a tie as I desired. BTW, this census reported William was born March 24, 1845 and came to Canada in 1855. He was Irish. So I backtracked and tried to find this William Stafford in the 1881 Census. I found him as the head of a household with his wife being Margaret. He was 33 in 1881, suggesting he was born in 1848 -- I look at this as a transcription error for two reasons. First, the 1881 is a transcription (i.e., you can't see the original record). Second, the 1901 Census I have is a photo of the actual census, and it's quite clear he reports he was born in 1845 and the rest of the family names match. Anyway, the 1881 Census reports his eldest daughter, and first born, was an Alice Stafford, b 1873 in NB. All members of this family report a religion of CoE -- the same religion reported by our James F Stafford (b 1842). So now, since Alice's birth dates match, I deduce William's daughter is Alice Freeborn Stafford, and they live side-by-side in 1901. With the help of a researcher at the National Archives of Canada, I find a James, Alice and William Stafford living/boarding with a Wallace family headed by Joseph Wallace. In fact, Alice is listed as "Alice F Stafford" age 62. William, aged 25 is also listed there. In summary, our "the most senior" James Stafford was b c. 1811 in Ireland. He came to Kings Cnty NB Canada in 1855 from Ireland. He came with his wife Alice F Stafford and sons James F Stafford and William. They lived with the Wallace family and all are listed as farmers. So I suspect they came poor and lived and worked the Wallace farm. Young James F (b 1842) left for St John about 1867/8, met Catharine c. 1869 and had all of their children there. William (b 1845) married Margaret c. 1872-3, in King's Cnty. Their first girl was named Alice Freeborn Stafford (recall that our 1842 James F's first daughter was Alice and that the first boy was William John). William and Alice (his daughter) are living beside each other in St John in the 1901 Census. Also, note that Williams first and second son were named Thomas, and William John, respectfully. So, what happened to the eldest James Stafford, b. c. 1811? He is living/boarding with a Baxter family in King's Cnty, NB., in 1881. So, his wife Alice died between 1871 and 1881. So, where do we go from here? I'm hoping that since William (our James F's brother) and his daughter lived beside each other and stayed close to the original James, that they kept communications up and passed along more information about our ancestors to their families. So, the key is to find the decendants/families of William and Alice. He was married to Deborah Jean North on 2 Jun 1973 in Hurlock, MD. Children were: Johnathan Lawernce Stafford, Justin Nicholas Stafford , Amanda Louise Stafford, Jr.. |
